Tile floors set flat, tight and built to last
A tile floor is only as good as what is under it. Most failures, cracked tiles, hollow spots and uneven edges, come from skipped prep, not bad tile. Mejia Construction installs porcelain and ceramic floors in homes across Cathedral City and the Coachella Valley, starting with the slab and the layout before the first tile goes down.
What we install
- Porcelain tile for living areas, kitchens, baths and high-traffic halls.
- Ceramic tile for lighter-use rooms and budget-conscious projects.
- Large-format tile for a clean look with fewer grout lines.
- Wood-look plank tile that gives a warm look without worrying about water or heat.
- Outdoor-rated tile for covered patios and transitions to a pool area.
- Baseboards and transitions so the floor finishes cleanly at walls and doorways.
Our tile installation process
- Remove the old floor. Carpet, laminate or old tile comes out and is hauled away.
- Prepare the slab. Clean, check for flatness, grind high spots, fill low spots and add crack isolation where needed.
- Plan the layout. Find the room’s center lines and plan cuts so you do not end up with thin slivers at doorways.
- Set the tile. Use the right thinset and trowel for the tile size, with full coverage and level edges.
- Grout and seal. Grout after the thinset cures, then seal where the grout calls for it.
- Trim and clean. Install baseboards and transitions, then clean the floor and walk it with you.
Signs it’s time for new floors
- Cracked or loose tiles, or tiles that sound hollow when tapped.
- Grout that is crumbling, stained or missing.
- Carpet that traps dust and allergens from desert wind.
- Mismatched flooring from room to room.
- Laminate or vinyl that has swollen from water near the kitchen or bath.
Tile in desert homes
Most homes in the Coachella Valley sit on concrete slabs, which are a good base for tile as long as they are flat and stable. Slabs move a little with temperature and settling, which is why crack isolation matters on older homes. Tile stays cool in summer, does not hold dust like carpet and handles the sand that comes in after windy days. Running one tile through the main living areas makes a home feel larger, and it ties neatly into a kitchen remodel or bathroom remodel. Planning a bigger update? Floors are usually one of the first decisions in a home remodel.
